August 23rd, 2007, 08:30 PM
hey, man.
you should try to copy some other ppls work, i did a lot when i was about your age and that really helped me as it sort of programmed me to do certain things like poses, faces and the like. after u have done some of that, do a sketch of your own and see if you improve. also do the usual, look at anatomy, other ppls works and stuff
good luck

hey moonster thanks, just curious are you irish too?
See the guysin the woods were actualy my attempts at drawing much lighter like alan lee does(lord of the rings concept artist).
i dont think the pics i have up chart my progression out of really heavy stuff from earlier, but my rendering has definatly improved.
anyone in praticular you'd suggest learning from,I like andrew jones:android: stuff,so maybe ill try some of those.
also my updates are few and far between due to my pc uploading issues and laziness.i try and get some up this week.
l Also need to not resise my pics so small.they dont show up well.
any way the concept im doing now will hopfully be a continued progress.
thanks man

hope to post more soon.

September 20th, 2007, 03:23 AM
The chair is a bit (actually pretty much) out of perspective.
But I gotta that your rendering techique looks a little rough.
Or maybe it is your paper? Nice start so far.
Any humans?

It seems to me that you are trying to do too many things at the same time. Try to learn the basics before you go over to designing characters or painting. Do more studies. Of course painting inbetween doing studies doesn't hurt, but I think if you concentrate more on learning anatomy etc. at first you'll improve faster.

Hi! It is great to hav an sb in an early age as yours. And, congrats to u for a good headstart. (I didn't know there is something called 'sb' at ur age :P .)
Well, here's my 2 cents:
I think at your age is more likely about info gathering. So, besides involved yourself deeply into the traditional media. You should nvr neglect ur study as a student :P. As Miyazaki said in his biography,"...need not hurry get urself into art school.." He likes to encourage youngster to get more xposure and widen ur knowledge in many aspect as you can. And, try to read more. Coz it is very good to excersice ur imaginations. I believe drawing skills would come along while you into practice. (This is what im doing now, practice and practice and practice...)
But, idealization, originality and identity is something hard to come by with mere drawings and practice.
In short, widen your perspective of thoughts as much as you can. It could be the fuel that powers up your creativity in later years. And, as many great people in this forum said "Keep working with your anatomy studies", or do more master replica. However, never forget to analyze before you copy.
Cheers. And Happy sketching!

September 26th, 2007, 04:32 PM
this is a really promising start - theres lots of imaginative stuff happening..gotta agree with a lot of people and say not to neglect your observational drawings - that fist study in post 7 is really good... more stuff like that would definately help you in your more creative drawings...
having said that, make sure you dont stop doing cool interesting things tho - a nice mix of the 2 is definately the best way to go :)
also, listen to chenga - he/she talks sense :)

Hey thanks a lot for those tutorials man.:)
I tried out some of the blending with the 10% brushes and it does work quite well.
I'm going to experiment with those in my spare time,of which i have little at the moment.:[
I applied it to the dark rider, and i can see already some better results.
painting is a really slow process for me,But the next update will show what little progress in the painting ive made.
wow 2 pages,i need to post more artwork.

Hullo! thanks for stopping by my sb.
Another mouse user.. :) Some good conceptual stuff going on, and you seem serious about improving. Saw you were looking for a good anatomy drawing book. Loomis seems good indeed, although I don´t have experience with it. I find George B Bridgman pretty damn good, I´d suggest looking into that. Also drop by the daily sketch group, or the spartan training camp under activities, those are good practice.
Good luck with your exams and studies! you seem to be on the right track.

hey guys, thanks for all the comments, ill try and take on board thetuff you guys have said.
in the middle of exams now,but then its Christmas holidays for 3 weeks.
Ill try and get some art done then, hopefully i can get back to doing some anatomical stuff.
messing in photoshop with brushes but im shit at it,i need to get better at painting though.
anyway heres a few pieces,
the pen helmet guy is one i was doing in geography, and i really like how it came out,but not the scan the scan makes it look crap.
the crab thing is from a myth,or soothing, apparently they eat camels.
the self portrait was something i messed up for art class, but how often d i get to be blue with ginger hair.
the other dude,is scarring me he has absolutely no design process, involved.
i thought the title of imagination dies was good for him.
thats about as far as i can push the rendering at the moment,i need to take a break from it and then come back me i think.

Whoa that last ones a little big, you might want to resize it so we can better judge it.
Anyway nice stuff man just keep studying and drawing from life and drawing everyday. More importantly keep enjoying it.
One thing I've noticed is that you renderinf gets a little messy sometimes and you might want to buy a 0.5mm mechanical pencil with 2B leads I find works best. Cya around.

your insects are really nice - i reckon if you approached some human subjects in the same way as you do you insect studies you could get some really nice illos and also learn a lot on the way... i think potentially you may feel a little hung up on getting your humans perfect, and consequently tighten up when it comes to draw them (this is something i do too, in fact most people do i would say) hope this helps mate, dunno if it makes sense :s
you eye studies are spot on too :)
Mu-Chuu
February 25th, 2008, 05:26 PM

Other than that, i love your monsters and their poses, they have a natural feel to them.

Here is some stuff ive been messing with in photoshop,I'm just experimenting with it,hopefully i'll be able to use it some day.
the painting was a preliminary concept for a larger painting that didn't turn out so well.
plus a frog.
miles-haven't used those leads, but ive got a 0.35 pencil.I actually took your advice on rendering more neatly for one concept there recently but i forgot to post it,it came out well too.so thanks
Mu-chuu-I agree i really need to work on my human anatomy, especially feet and legs though.
Strybjorn-thanks for dropping by,I think that might be a good idea too,I enjoyed the insect studies which is really good,so if i could get rounf to enjoying human studies then great.I have a tendency to ignore what i can't do,its something i should really work on.

March 20th, 2008, 04:19 PM
I love your anatomy studies, especially the eye with the outline of the socket. Very useful.
If I were to say anything it would be to work on your knowledge of light and shadow. WHen you color in these peices you seem to throw random colors around without a real plan. My suggestion is to do some life studies of trees mountains and what not and really look at the picture and how light reacts with the objects. Remember your eye only sees in color because the light around you creates it. Concentrate on creating contours with shadows and highlights, then move on to saturation and what not. Heres a really useful tutorial on the subject. I think you will find it useful.
http://itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm#top
I think you should start with simple shapes in perspective. Draw a box, cylinder, cone, and sphere. Then create a direction and elevation for a light source. Color in the contours using different shades of grey, then create the shadow the object casts. Then after you get the hang of that create a scene with all those object in it and do the same thing with lighting. I think it will hep you understand color a little better. Check out that tutorial too. It will really help.

March 27th, 2008, 07:15 PM
the umbrella man:thanks for the help, that tutorial is awesome,I have to get round to studying it properly.I enjoyed doing those loomis eye studies.
Alright I haven't been drawing much recently but I did a relatively quick referenced piece just there,I might finish it and render it a lot better, but I find these things really useful,so hopefully more referenced faces soon.
the other was just a random doodle i did.

Cool stuff in here. In regards to that demon step by step, looks like you could use some harder edges in the thing. Everything is so soft, it does not do too good of a job of explaining the form.
Cheers!

March 27th, 2008, 08:28 PM

hey curehead your creatures and monsters are really cool, but a few things i notice that maybe i only think about is if say in post #63 with the first monster have you thought about why it has thos horn things or the techy stuff on its shoulder, is there story behind all of your design decisions do its feet look soft because they dont get around much?
The Curehead
May 8th, 2008, 05:33 PM
matty_mcmullen :Your totally right, that was just a random doodle to practice painting, but those horns make no sense, they serve no function.I'm really appreciative of your critique.theres a story around some, but others are just what pops into my mind,i should work on developing my ideas further.
thanks.
Epson scanners and Vista are not a good combination,no matter what ive tried (drivers, reinstalling etc) it will no longer work.I'll be taking longer with updates as i have to go back and forth from computers.
I've been slacking off recently, but i did do one piece awhile back after viewing an incredible thread on ca.

May 9th, 2008, 03:11 AM
i like this especially its head, im glad you weren't offended by my critic i just love the story behond a character and it gives so much more depth to works especially in concept development which is really your job if you think about it. i just think of a time i put a belly button on a monster just out of habit and then it hit me this thing never had an umbilical cord so why does it have a belly button.

loads of cool original stuff being generated here, tho i really like these studies (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1712546&postcount=76) - i think you should do more of these, especially in greyscale to establish form without getting too concerned with colour - you can always colourise them later in photochop - focusing on the form is a really important step i feel...
