i tried to draw directions. i mean i didnt try to draw muscles and stuff like that...
i was looking for lines wich goes in to the body, becaus the body overcome out of positive forms. and i didnt trie to draw contours. so, if i saw just a contour line, i didnt draw it... hm... i hope you understand. im very sorry for my english:[

Welcome to CA. It's good that you are starting your art endeavor with plenty of life studies. Keep doing that, it will make all the difference. Take some time to flesh some of those out more too, you know, try to finish a few up. I recommend some anatomy books for bone and muscle studies to help your understanding of the underlying forms and the effect on surface values. Good luck at school.

some modelling stuff... it really help, when you first modelling and after that drawing. i think you know better where the important things are...where you should take care.
and yeah, they are just modelling sketches, so i worked fast and thats why that raw surface. but i think it dont need to be smooth for that what i looked for.

Hey Schmitzi
That´s very profound work. Those life drawings and the sculpting are an excellent base and it is allready clearly to see that this training serves you well. Also the character work seems to have a good direction of developement.
What stuck out to me was that the sketch of the guy with the breathing mask seems clearer than the colored version.
Otherwise, good stuff. Carry on like that.

your lines have a looseness that appeals to me. at times it looks like you don't control where you place them but on second look you actually have a very strong sense of what you're drawing. I think if you control your linework a little more you could create an extremely detailed style thats unlike many.
I also like your digital stuff. you're really starting to grasp more and more of how to colour...and you use painter....that one didn't work out for me :P

hey dude, your pieces are very good, like the nude girl in post#36. in the last, i think its ok, but i think some things aint right. i think the scythe is out of perspective. it looks like he is tilting it, so the knife part should be more foreshortend imo. antoher thing thats bothering me is the shorts of this fellow. it looks weird, dunno, but you should check that out.. a thing that i use all the time is watching your drawings in a mirror (or if yur using PS use the mirror horizontal option). you will instantly detect perspective errors.
keep at it!

Nice book. The girl with the white hair and thick ass is very nice. Tho, I noticed in most of your pics you either hide the hands or dont fill them in. Lets see some more hands in your work. The one of the boy has a nice looking hand so i'm sure you're capable. :D

great sense of tone & the lines of this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=163087&stc=1&d=1183464579) series is really interresting to watch!
current week points in my eyes are proportions and faces, doing lots (100000... kidding) of studys will fix that. make up a technique with few lines as possible to be able to too lets say 10-15 figure studys in a hour and you may get the experience in a fast run. doing that for some time will also give you a good foundation for getting in a relaxed & good mood for drawing and to be able to not loose the feeling. blablabla

Yes!!! Ive got a Wacom now.
A simply nude for beginning. I dont think its bad for the first try. I dont know how to draw transition optimal... im still very halting.
How do you choose colours and the ratio between the colours?
Do you mix it after schematic or just feeling?
Please help me to understand...
( Ok... i know... I must mention it again, sorry for my english... ) :/

Just checking the last posts. I hope you thought of gettign texture shots from the abondoned russian bording school. Great for making brushes and spicing up yer photoshop in general.
I don´t really understand the question on colors.
You can create your own color schemes or use other ppl schemes.
A neat trick is to take a picture you like for its colors to photoshop.
Filter/Mosaik/ and then tweak the cell size untill there are only a few left and save. Voila: a color scheme.
Okay, that´s a little over the top but the concept should be clear now.
If that wasn´t your question, post it in german and I might be able to help.
keep it up

bbwolf - Well, I’m still trying to write in English. Because I have to keep it up.
Thanks for remember me that you can create brushes by your own. I totally forgot you could do this in PS.
Yes, it wasn’t really my question, but still thanks. Yeah sure, why not to get inspired by colour schemes from photos...
But I would like to explain my question. It is not the problem how to get colours from other pictures. Its more, how you get the colours schemes from your mind. Sure, getting colours from photos is one method. But I want to know what the best way is to mix and keep the colour in the right ratio…
Are you taking the colours from the colour field in PS without mixing? - This would be like more from sense.
Or do you mix the colour after schema? (See what I’m trying on the pictures)
Oh man! It’s so difficult to explain…
I mean there is the colour from an object, there comes colour from a light source and there is the shadow, which is also colour that swayed by other light source. Right? : /
So you have three colours (in this example) that interact.
And my question is: How do you mix them and bring them in the right ratio?
For me, I create balls in Cinema 4D and take the colour with the pipette. But I more want to know how to mix them like real colour (oil paint).
See the following pictures… I hope they explain better and show how I’m thinking about colour and light…
bbwolf
December 5th, 2008, 03:37 PM
I think you´re on the right track but trying too hard. The technical approach is sound thou. Often it´s more a feel and, well, experience and reference.
Personally I try to think about the existing colors I have in the picture and the light and apply what I learned about how the colors affect each other (not so much really). Radiosity and bounce light and stuff. There are some great tutorials here. They´re just a search away, prolly in the EDUCATION & LEARNING section. There you can see how colors progress. I am sorry I can´t give a direct link but my old bookmarks recently went bad.
And don´t care too much of maybe getting it wrong. It´s just another exercise. Some cool concepts spring from "wrong" pictures.
I just pick the color of, say the floor, and then paint with an opacity controlling, preasure sensitve brush onto the area of the object that is influenced by the backbouncing light from the floor onto the object.
Einfallswinkel = Ausfallwinkel
Then it´s a simple question of "how much" depending onto the intensity of the light aaand it´s color. Having painted this on it´s own layer I can reduce, duplicate, multiply, blur, filter andwhatnot too.
Hope that helps.
Cheers.

There is another example that i made to understand how the colors interact.
Well i think I undertand more and more...
bbwolf - Yeah, you're right... I really should paint with more senses. I think I clench myself too much.
So i will do more of colour experiences and practices.

So this is my newest painting im working on, its not finished yet. And after a lot of colour studies i thought it would be a great idea to draw - :dead: :uzi2:
I'm still not satisfied... but i'm think its a good start for the time being. I will put more interacting lighter in the pakground soon.

nice studies. Something actually clicked for me looking at the last ball where the lightsources overlapp on the ball. Of course it´s additive colormixture like on a screen. d´oh. How can something so simple evade me for all this time. Thanks. :yayca:
Good going with the last study but I think you shouldn´t seperate background and characters while working. You should have both present, not neccesarily on the dsame layer but in the same file/canvas.

December 28th, 2008, 07:19 PM
Hi Schmitzi, I really like your "15-20min" studies from the last page, and nice pics from berlin btw. :)
For your last painting: Please stay away from white for the background, because it's very hard to see the right values and the skin tones depend very much on the surrounding.
Try to mix some colors from the background into the shadows of the character (to unify) and use the "light source" color for the highlights. Hope it helps! :teeth: (ich ha's irgendwo mal glese, s'funktioniert aber nöd schlecht für mich)

bbwolf -- Its great that my studies helps! :yayca:
Gokoi -- Thanks!
That's true, i really should not start to paint on a white background. But i think in this illustration its ok. 'cause i will keep the background white since there are some white highlights on the body... it wouldn't make sense if there is a BG in grey. No?

Kristo Novo -- Thanks!
I also just started to draw. So I also have to figure it out for my self.
Usually i am using the round - normal Brush with 100% hardness. I'm painting with compression for size and for opacity I'm using the circle-rad (airbrush pen). For special lines i change the settings (hardness, size, distance, etc...)
But for special Brushes - brushes with texture you should create them by your own 'cause the B's from PS are in a very low resolution. From a certain size they're getting diffuse. For me I'm usually creating them 1000x1000 pixel.
Hope that helps a bit...

omg… :bashful: SORRY: now, that I read my own post again, I see that there´s an un-lucky combination :D
I was (and still am) thinking that your first digital piece is really good (from a technical viewpoint!!!). Now that compliment should stand alone right there! that I ask you where you are located right below is unlucky!! I didn´t mean it "that" way!! I basically ask every swiss fellow where they are located, maybe I stumble over somebody from Zurich that would form some kind of sketch-group in future (got no time right now/school…:nohope:)

also cool brush work in your digitals...
when it goes about color mixing in digi-painting...i do it experimental..u must learn to paint like in real life..with traditional media...but in software you use..

Really nice sketchbook shumizu :) I'm trying to get a grip on faces and colors and I must agree with the others. That face from #102/108 is really great.
I'll definitely keep an eye on this thread!

Lyno: Hi! Thank you very much. This really means a lot to me. :)
First some doodles from home. Then the sketches from Florenze, only some head doodles. i tried some imaginary heads, i really should do that more, and more figurative.

Some of those eyes have a very intense emotion towards them, nice!
I'm jealous that you get to go to florence :( I live in the US and I'm poor so no real hope in traveling any time soon. I'd love to go to florence and athens, especially athens because being able to stand in the birthplace of Socrates and the coming of science is something I can only imagine...

tandy1000: Hey thanks! Yes, florence was great either way. Was very impressive to stand pre to the sculptures and paintings from Michelangelo. When your are interessted in architecture and art, florence surely is the right place. But then again, there are so many tourists and its all fitted. That was a little bit annoying. I very hope you will fly once to these places... :confident
Mischeviouslittleelf: Thanks for commenting. I very looked out for the highlights... she is looking like a dolly-bird now... i like... ^^

Its true with an attitude like that you probably wont get anywhere. I do believe once you get over this art slump you'll be fine. I know you have plenty of potential. Already seen what you can REALLY do. Just keep practicing and don't be lazy like me.
best of luck,

I like everything so far, especially that creature concept which is on a whole new level for you. It is a blast to see you improve in just a few posts, lovely progress. How have you been, and how is Nino? As for me, I been busy with school,a new job, and soon to be moving to a new place so I haven't really had time to sit down and really paint. Hope to talk to you soon, and of course to see your updates.

I tried some new stuff over weekend. Tried something to do with dynamics and camera tracking. This is the result. I never really worked with 3d softwares before and there are still some mistakes... But its FUN!
