Hey everyone,

been too long since i posted here.

I just returned from aussie land, so i'm still very jet-lagged. Thus here i am at 3 in the morning (and thank you Mark for covering my class).

Here are some recent drawings from my class demos at Gnomon. These were done fairly quickly in front of the class, about 45min each. The purpose of these sketches are to explain how to sketch and render w/ markers.

I come up w/ the designs on the fly when i show up in class....so pardon for the slight genero designs =P One is a transport, the other is her scout ship.

Fun stuf! I can excuse any "genero" designs if they're rendered this well, espesially your mastery of fading out details and creating a central focus
(shouldn't these go in the sketches section?!)

Were you tought markers through your architectural studies or you experience in the ID profession?

you should tell these peeps to make a marker rendering thread so we can all trade skills

Please post more if you decide not to sleep : )

Feng,

Cool designs dude, glad to see you posting here again.

It's impressive that you did each of these in around 45 minutes. I'm currently trying to build my speed overall. I'm realizing everyday how valuable it is to be able to work very fast as well as efficently. I'm beginning to see in mech design and painting, the difference between trying really hard to pull off a good mech or painting, (spending a lot of time and energy), and doing a piece of work quick and precise, almost flawlessly. I wonder how long it takes most artists in the concept art field to get faster and more precise.

you didn't post your enviro demo :D

I think he busted those out less than 45mins considering he was a little late for the class- did some CC- and did an enviroment demo.

it's really amazing to see feng work.

woah mark comes here too?

Hey Feng i am a big fan and love your marker style. I have been thinking about taking your class, well actually i am taking it this next opening. My question is this I know that you are teaching it with Hong Ly, is it 10 sessions do teach at least half of the class meaning 5 sessions? I don’t mean to take anything from Hong but I am more interested in the kind of art that you produce. Once again can’t wait to take your class

Just curious, what were you in Australia for Feng? I'm an Aussie so if I had known you were down here I would have tried to meet you, any chance you'll be coming back again?

And awesome work, but I think thats been said already :)

Hey Everyone,

thank you all for the compliments. I really appreciate it. It's been a while since i can post....

Now that i'm back in LA, i'm going to be working on several personal projects. I'll try to post more often here.

to answer some questions:

- I didn't use marker until i got to Art Center. The viscomm classes there taught me everything.

- Yes, Hong and I split up the Saturday class. However, i also teach a solo class on Wednesday nights. If you are interested in both characters and ID stuff, then take the Saturday class. If you just want a full-dose of ID, the Wed. one might be better. Either way, it's a fun class.

- Chris Anderson: don't worry about drawing speed. The more you draw, the faster you'll get. Work at your own pace. For example, a sketch like the ones i posted would've taken me 4-5 hours back in school to draw.

okay...i gotta sleep..wayyy to late...or early? (6:30am)...yikes.

Hong: I'll teach this Sat. Congrads on the new job too....have fun!

JabahSlap if I could recommend it- I would take a class with both of them (However, I didn't take that class where feng splits it)

we had Mark Goerner for a few weeks and it was great. I mean the stuff Mark could do was amazing and feng too. and both of them have their own tricks of the trade and style.

basically its better to have more samples of the pro vs just one view. originally i felt the same way you did "bummer no feng for 3 weeks" but in the end i'm really pleased that mark taught the class.

hey feng

great stuff as usual. those class demos were so inspirational when i took your class. it's scary how you put together something so great looking in such a short time, seemingly effortless! :)

can't wait to see more!

FENG!!! All hail...my inspiration

I absolutely love your stuff, all of it. Mechs, creatures, i dont know where you get all those ideas from tho. You must have one HUGE imagination, that I wish I had.

Anyways, great stuff, and 45 minutes? Jumpin Jellybeans Batman!!!

One question though:
Even though your an ID man, do you ever do any paintings or full pencil renderings?

i'm learning alot in class using markers, i'm at martin college in Sydney.
These are very cool sketches indeed. i love your scence of scale.

i'l have alot of my marker stuff up on my site in a few days time, i'm studying flash animation and interface dynamics, here's my site so far.. alti's site (http://members.optusnet.com.au/alti/site%20layout%202.html)
if you want someone to do any flash animation, perhaps spruse up some of your site in flash, drop me a line :)
