okay, after weeks of learning photoshop and painter, i needed a break. so i have to switch back to pencils (HB is what i prefer). so these are two character designs i came up with...

Nice pencil work! I think your stuff would look even better.in black Col Erase or other colored pencil, on smooth paper. It's so much nicer than graphite IMO

really great stuff so far! That first anatomy excercise looks really helpful, I dont know how well I'd be able to keep my attention throughout it, though.
its obvious you are very talented, your character designs are really well done, they just don't seem to look finished. I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT! :D

ah yes... COL ERASE and PRISMACOLORS... i've tried them but i still need to learn how to render with it in a clean way, just like carlos huante does (fyi, one of the best artist in the world). also, does anyone know a good smooth paper?? yeah i know it looks unfinished.... i'll do better next time 28chelseaslater... thank you for the comment...

Yes, I have the Carlos Huante Gnomon vids. One of the ways he gets those soft tones is to smudge with a tissue wet with alcohol. Probably smudges with dry too. Personally I like to render with carefully laid, slightly curving hatch lines, which is how many of the old masters rendered. Try laying down some tone and smudging with your finger or use the side of the lead.
For the paper, just use a good layout bond, marker paper, or copy paper. Smooth bristol board is alot sturdier and permanent, but I find the surface to hard. The other papers have a soft feel.

these are some old works... actually my first try in coloring digitally. It was for my character and object design class, and we have to come up with some characters base on the seven deadly sins. So these guys are lust, sloth and gluttony, respectively. man, i still need to learn more about digital painting. please, could anyone help me improve my style? thanks.

The Summer Season is often feared by the people of the tribe Quathcala. Not only because the harvest is not good, but also a terrible creature plagues
their lands; eating their harvests and their animals. It was told that their land is cursed. This curse began when the Gods ordered a farmer to bring his son to the highest mountain and bring him as a sacrifice. The Farmer's heart was broken yet he must offer his son, in order for the God's to bestow them a bountiful harvest for this season. The farmer was torn between his love for his child and his gods. So, the night before he should make his offering, he picked his best and fattest pig, and put clothes on it. The next day, he offered the pig to the Gods, hoping that he will fool the Gods. But, the Gods were no fools. The Gods got mad and condemned the lands of Quathcala. The Gods turned the pig into a horrible creature and promised that it will return every time the sun's heat is searing and merciless. Only killing the pig and offering it's head will end the curse... so far, the tribe of Quatchala still awaits for a hero to emerge...

hey, just found your sb, very nice.
your pencil drawings and designs are very cool, though i think your paintings are looking a bit hazy and undefined in places, save for that summer plague cow, that is just perfect (both the pencils and the colour) :P
ill definitley be checking back here, keep it up

These look very nice. I like the digitals alot; and the monsters have some very well developed personality. I would look to some of the proportions on the human figures. The Spartan, for example, looks a little large in the hips. He seems to be the only one, but a few of the others have some strange looking muscle arangement in the arms. But, these would be nit-picking type crits; the rendering on all of it rocks!

masterpug - thanks for the crit. i''ll work on it. yeah it look a little large... i'll fix that when i paint it. which i'll start doing...... now! hehe

okay, i'm not really into the whole anime style of drawing, but i do dig their ideas, concepts and the variations of characters. So, i drew some characters that i like, my way... Trigun -- Vash, naruto--- Gaara, Sasuke
comments are welcome

Fantastic, I love the gestures and monsters.
Crits - If I may be so bold, I suggest you work on your lines a bit, sketchy is good (and looks better in my opinion) but clean lines are always a nice confidence builder.

this piece started as a small thumbnail. scanned it in then painted it. hmmm i'm not yet done for this piece... i think i could still push it more, just to practice rendering with photoshop. i'm trying to remove the whole muddy feel from my paintings... please feel free to leave a comment. thanks.

#37 Reminds me of the old DOOM monsters somewhat, which is definatley a good thing. The only thing I can say is that the legs all appear as if they are on the side nearest the eye. I can't seem to look at it and see legs further back, I don't know quite how it's standing. D:
Apart from that, a nice terrifying concept.

smokey - haha maybe my subconscious was thinking about doom when i did this. yeah, the pose is on a side view, and then head is kinda turning. maybe because there is lack of emphasis on the legs on the other side.. maybe i should work on this a bit more. i appreciate the comment. thanks.

Great lookin stuff. I like the anime redesigns, that is a good idea for practice. The 4th silo on the top row, would look awesome fleshed out. I like the overly skinny legs that don't look like they belong yet add style to the shape.

Hey all this is looking really nice..although i think when you design your characters your thinking a lot about the anatomy aspect of that character....which is fantastic...but sometimes its nice to just Go wit The Flow...and construct your character with the clothes they are wearing...while keeping in mind what there figure would be like under this...this ofcourse is not always to go about an image...but can be good for certain things.
