starfishing; something's just plain wrong

I'm going to completely redraw this one, but before I do, I need to know what exactly is wrong. This is obviously not finished.
I don't know WHAT to do with the sky.
Somehow his character doesn't seem defined enough.
Something is just plain missing.

He's not defined well because he's white surrounded by white. Maybe continue that black theme on the left, all the way across? Add some stardust?

What's he sitting on?

It's unfinished, which is why there is all the white space.
It just seemed to me that the black theme wasn't the best thing to do, perhaps.
