View Full Version : Teen Challenge #30: The Devils plaything.
Evil_Sloth
June 23rd, 2007, 03:29 AM
Congratulations on reaching #30 dudes! I'm going to make sure it continues on from here.
The Rules:
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.
The Topic:
Character/Creature: The Devils plaything.
This can be either human or creature. Something that would entertain the devil.
The Deadline:
Saturday, July 7th at midnight PST
Two weeks. I'm going to be tight uploading the voting thread so get it done on time please.

That is frikkin sweet. Love all the subtleties. Only crit is the crevasse under the left guys legs. It just stops O.o. Mebbe have it curve around to the left and wander off into the distance? Great piece nonetheless.

Hey guys, first let me say, that there's obviously a lot of great talent here. And while I see this talent, I also can't help but feel like there's something wrong. Forgive me for being honest, you can fight with me if you want. But it just seems like this isn't being taken as seriously as it should.
I look at these wip entries so far and I see very strong illustrations, but I can't exactly see a clearly defined Devil's plaything in each and every one. It's like the same problem that was going on with the CHoW a week or two ago. We dont' want to be so strict here that people end up being afraid of entering, but I think we should have some clearly defined rules. We should be making sure that our pieces clearly define the character that we're trying to portray or whatever.
Forgive me if you take offense to this, I realize these are all wip's so far. I only want this to remain as an activity that does what it should. Challenge teens. Guidelines never hurt anybody.

I see what your saying sketcheth.
More controlled guidelines are a good idea. I'll give out some more refined instructions next round, but for now have fun and play around

I see what you are saying, if I saw mine I'd say that it doesn't adhere to the topic, however it is still very wip. It will make sense when I finish it, (hopefully).
But, i do agree with guidelines, I do tend to wander with my ideas.
final, critique much appreciated.

i have got something cooking for this...
entries are looking cool so far, good job everyone!:)
ok, here's a pretty worked-on WIP:
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u256/pettergunnarsson/TC30visa.jpg
got it done... kinda unhappy with how the figure developed.
http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u256/pettergunnarsson/TC30visa-1.jpg
rusted metal, burning heat.
retarded, mental, living meat.
he twists my thoughts to rabid rage.
in my own world, I'm flying through space.
I'm reading the book, but on the wrong page.
i am a mental astronaut, tied up in lace.
ceilings falling, bones that rot.
maggots crawling, mom's in the pot.
alive, not living, he keeps me running.
alone in the desert, he caught me as a boy.
He orders me to act with his devious cunning.
I'll never escape for I am the devils toy.
i should write some sort of explanation... the figure in the background is the devil. the one in the front is the devils plaything.
the devil is controlling and deranging his thoughts, the poor guy lives in a very strange world where he think he is an astronaut.
in the poem-thingy i tried to express the strangeness of his mental world. thats kid of it... hope thats more clear!:)

I don't see the devils plaything in yours at all orifice , please explain ( even though that a picture should be self explaining, at least a bit after some observation ) cause I really don't see it.

paperx: goofy time!
zan: looks cool, but the torsos are too short and distorted (judging from the ass cheek position) also there's something funny going on in the knee area.
sloth: looking mighty fine, watch out for the floor though, it looks kinda funky.
gunnar: looks good, I don't get it though but that's nothing new.
koala: wow nice pencil skills man - his hips/legs seem quite big.

Hey, well here's the pencil version of my idea, my pencil skills are lacking to say the least too much time spent on Photoshop not enough on sketching anyway I will at some point colour it digitally but I just lost my first hour or so of colouring (accidental deleted) and I'm too irritated to start colouring again for now, so I will post my coloured one later on, anyway sloth and koala those both look great, really like the composition on yours sloth.
Oh also any tips on rendering fire in Photoshop so that it doesn’t look like a big orange lump would be greatly appreciated

I usually use white brush strokes with an orange outerglow and yellow inner glow and mess with it until it looks right. But I'm not very skilled so I'd like to see some other techniques too.
Oh, also, if you copy that layer merged with a blank layer under it, use a slight gaussian blur, and play with the color mode, you can achieve a pretty cool glowing effect.

lewis, i think the white thing (what is it?) above his head is hurting this piece, the subtlety of the eyes in the background is practically ruined because of it. great potential

Every Tuesday the devil loves nothing more than depicting one of his favourite Fairy Tales, using the inmates of Hell as his actors...dressing them up, changing their form and in general, Humiliating them. He sits and watches, admiring how hilariously ghastly it all is. However every now and then he will intervene to change the ending or a major part of the tale...usually for the worse.

haha yeah! great concept prophet! haha, the thing that cracks me up is the devil intervening in the play, all excited, really playing it out, doing voices... i bet the devil is into acting.

I decided to depict one of the mayan lords of hell as the devil's play thing, and give him more of a mortal charcter. Wasn't quite finished, but i'm tired of working on it.

"In Mesoamerican myth, Au Puch is the Mayan Lord of the dead. Au Puch presides over the ninth and worst layer of Hunhau (Hell). He is usually depicted as a skeleton (skull head, bare ribs and spiny projections from the vertebrae). According to some legends, he is said to occasionally roam the earth looking for evil people, causing war, sickness, and death. Once someone is condemned to Hunhau, they can never leave. Sacrificial victims were offered to Au Puch in the cenote or sacred pool. "

" I bet you didn't know it
but I'm a fiddle player too,
And if you care to take a dare
I'll make a bet with you
Now you play a pretty good fiddle boy
But give the devil his due
I'll bet a fiddle of gold against your soul
'Cause I think I'm better than you."
To my dismay, my scanner is broken so I had to take a bad photo of it. I know its not very good compositionally... I didn't plan much :s
