View Full Version : What does your screen name mean?

That fat kid
June 23rd, 2007, 01:41 AM
It occured to me as I was sifting through people's posts that a lot of the handles are pretty esoteric. I was wondering if anyone had any good anecdotes about how they picked their names, or if they just wanted to clarify.

asoir
June 23rd, 2007, 03:50 AM
asoir = riosa backwards, my surname. im curious about yours however

kovah
June 23rd, 2007, 04:35 AM
kovah = havok backwards. Switched the C for the K because K is the first letter of my name.

stoph
June 23rd, 2007, 04:45 AM
christopher. no brainer there. oft in games, though, ill go by the name Mediumrawr, that being a play on words from my first tauren on WoW. Medium indicates the grade at which the meat is cooked, of which raw builds off of, but add the R at the end and we get a variant of ROAR. kinda clever, i thought..

Rhynome
June 23rd, 2007, 04:51 AM
Rhynome... I have absolutely no idea in hell.

I think I got there with Rhyme (as I liked the look of the letter combination); then I played about with it a bit in my head and found Rhynome. It wasn't exactly intentional, I didn't decide to chose Rhyme as a base, it's just the one that popped up in my head and then next Rhynome.

Stark
June 23rd, 2007, 05:37 AM
Stark...off of a TV series on Sci Fi channel named "Eureka." Was about a town full of scientists doing some really awesome stuff...The leader of the research facility is named Nathanial Stark...

I didn't get it from Tony Stark aka Ironman

Duq
June 23rd, 2007, 05:38 AM
Duq are the first three letters of my last name. When I was a wee boy I used it for highscores I got on arcade machines, and now I'm still stuck with it :)

Uziel

Other options were "Moons" which is my family name but that name is often already taken or "Moonster" a nickname i got from my friends

WillN
June 23rd, 2007, 08:08 AM
WillN- Will is my first name, and n is the first letter of my last name. Pretty simple...

Goog
June 23rd, 2007, 08:17 AM
Mine doesn't come from google, but rather the beetles song, "I am the Walrus."... Because I am the walrus.

wild thing
June 23rd, 2007, 08:58 AM
Mine is not to be confused with Chocobos from Final Fantasy, or that bit about BirdieNumnum's from the Party.

I came up with it when I was playing pokemon. I liked giving them all nicknames for no reason other than when I had caught a whole bunch I could look through them all and hopefully get a laugh. I wanted to name one ChocoNumNum but it wouldn't fit, I thought it was a shame that I couldn't use it so when I was stumped about an AIM handle it came to mind.

And now you know. Hooray!

Sepulverture
June 23rd, 2007, 09:29 AM
Sepulchral - chral, + Overture - o = Sepul-verture. Was the name of a band that I formed with some highschool chums and played guitar in for a few years. More/less supposed to mean symphony from the grave, or symphony of the dead, or some other such thing (the overture isn't the symphony precisely, more the introduction to a symphony, but it sounded better than some of the alternatives we had that used the word symphony). After the we stopped jamming together the name just sort of stuck for me, since I was the most recognized member of the band, and now I use it in forums, games, and this and that.

Mitze
June 23rd, 2007, 09:44 AM
Mitze name of my cat now dead. Not that i ever liked him that much but i could never rememeber any of my other log on names. I really would like to change it.

Sheavolution

My first name is Shea, you can do much with the name Shea...examples; Sheasus, New-Shealand, Sheavrolet, Sheading, MilkSheake, etc. One day I made a list and just picked one :)

Jason Rainville
June 23rd, 2007, 12:41 PM
My real last name is Rainville.

After playing freelancer (in which one of the giant sleeper spaceships sponsored by germany was named "The Rhineland") I started merging the two names (and my two heritages, french and german) into one callsign on halo 1 and 2, msn and every single forum I visited - Rhineville. I've never called myself anything else online.

Gringo is my nickname since i was in grade school. Loco just means "crazy".

guggemmaneuver
June 23rd, 2007, 01:09 PM
That Fat Kid—> starting a thread like this without explaining your own handle? for shame. he's not even fat. seriously.

the so-called "guggenmaneuver" is an abbreviated hybridized-version of "guggenheimlichmaneuver," something that i came up for a grisly and yet, highly precarious routine that i unfortunately resorted to with great frequency in art school ... "Pulling a guggenmaneuver" if you will ... it refers to, in a general sense, the all-nighter, the last minute struggle to finish a project that you should have been working on for several weeks or several days ... and this stupid procrastination will likely end up causing some disastrous lack of sleep, shameful calling-out of work, hibernation for 24 hours or more, etc, etc. ... Probably even the evening before i would just goof around and waste a few hours, before really deciding to get started. Sometimes it worked out okay for me when the medium i was using was something that went pretty quick; other times it blew up in my face and i had to drop the class ... i.e. waiting until the night before to make a cast of a head in plaster for my sculpture class.

...here's the formula:...
+ 1 part guggenheim (reputable modern and very nice FLW architecture art museum in new york, also art patrons [professors, grads, clients, art directors, classmates] who are expecting the work)
+ 1 part heimlich (as in, lodged foodstuffs in the larynx hurtling out right onto the paper in a panicked deadline-driven fury...)
+ 1 part manuever (obviously continuation of heimlich, but really puts the idea of a burst of activity in a TOTAL FREAKED OUT PANIC into the mix.)

Carnifex
June 23rd, 2007, 01:11 PM
carnifex means "executioner". in highschool my mates used to tease me sometimes by taking the second case "carnifici" and shouting it out "carnifitzi" (since my last name is fitzinger). at some point they stopped using it,but the more i thought about it,the cooler it was. i mean,i get to be an executioner :)
have used it ever since, never could think of a cooler name, and it will definately stick with me a loooong time since coro shouted it out all over conceptart :D

My name atm is a bit pessimistic... this is relatively new, maybe I was drunk when I requested it? I dunno... but it means two-bit dead beat. Anyway, I threw the bottle out the door completely (I know I'm only 21, thing is I drank alone alot :P). I'm wanting to go back to my original nickname, which i used in games when I was in middle school and high school. They were relatively good times :D, trying to get that energy back.

a counterstrike handle from days of old, whenever i needed a handle for and online game i would pick a marsupial and a scary sounding adjective, i liked this one when i started using it and have stuck with it to this day

tomwaits4noman
June 23rd, 2007, 03:44 PM
mine is boring, a nick name I had in one job was lil tom, it stuck no one called me by my real first name bizarre thing is this happens in amost jobs I have had different friends call me different names,

Last nickname was lil tom because I was told I look like a little Tom Cruise... might have been a compliment but then T.C did the couch jumping and crazy talking...
SO I decided to have a user name with Tom in it but hate the "lil" part
5ft6 is not thats lil,

so I was listening to a lot of Tom Waits when I joined
but decided to make it a play on the phrase Time waits for no man... me trying to be clever and amuse myself with my wit...

Orchid, the Wild
June 23rd, 2007, 03:46 PM
I have two sisters, older and younger, and back in the day we somewhere along the way came up with these nicknames..

My older sister being Iris, the Impossible (because she is indecisive about everything) and my little sis is Petunia the Imaginative (she's very very creative)

And lastly I am Orchid, the Wild.. not wild in the sense that I am uncontrollable and unruly, but I was always the little bold kid that was always bringing home frogs and snakes, picking on the boys, climbing trees, playing in mud puddles, etc. Where the flower part of the names came in I don't quite remember.. maybe it was just because we're three pretty ladies.. hahah :D

Earendil
June 23rd, 2007, 04:02 PM
I'm a hopeless Middle-Earth historian.

This name is from my favorite story of The Silmarillion. It means "Lover of the Sea" (Romantique yes? ;)) and "Mariner"

Nobody pronounces it right though, so it's kinda useless.

Grendel Grack
June 23rd, 2007, 04:04 PM
I have a clown plecostomus (Peckoltia pulcher) named Grendel because he lives in a cave underneath a log and hates all other fish. That, and Beowulf is one of my all time favorite heroic poems. "Grack" was added for alliterative interest.

Quicksilver
June 23rd, 2007, 04:21 PM
My name is a reminder to myself of how far I have yet to go.
That's so cool, I love it. :)

I read in one of those zodiac books years ago and read that 'my' metal (I'm a Virgo) is Quicksilver.

My username everywhere else is CherryBlossom, but I think at the time of signing up I thought it sounded too cutesey and I wanted to be taken a bit more seriously as an artist or whatever. I latered considered changing it to "CheeB" (CherryBlossom condensed, and now the name of my website), but I learnt from some potty-mouthed Chinese members here (;P) that it is similar to a rude word in one of their dialects....so Quicksilver stays! Even though it doesn't particularly mean much to me. :^^;:

Moai
June 23rd, 2007, 06:41 PM
Moai is the Polynesian word for the giant statues on Rapa Nui, AKA Easter Island. I've always been into Moai and Tikis and such, and I'd painted a Moai for a friend just before joining this site. So, because it was fresh in my mind, and because my digital photo of it was easy to turn into an avatar, I became Moai.

Dile_
June 23rd, 2007, 06:58 PM
haha cool thread!

Dile comes from Dyle , which was what people called me for years in school .. I never liked my real name ( Dennis ) when I was younger... ( no idea how the name Dyle appeard , cause Dyle and Dennis isn't exactly similar )

And why am I calling myself Dile ? ugh, Dyle was busy here on CA :) so CA is the reason i call myself Dile all over the internet...

-Dennis, or Dile

kool-ka-lang
June 23rd, 2007, 10:40 PM
Kool ka lang: Filipino, or tagalog for any of these words:

Just chill man.
Chill
Just be cool
chill out.

literal meanings:
Kool: Cool (kinda obvious)
ka: you
lang: I don't really know what the precise translation for this is...it's kinda like "just". as in, "Could you JUST please chill?" or, "She's always JUST bringing attention to herself."

It used to be a show in the Philippines when I lived there, but I don't know if it's still going. Also, around the time I was thinking up of the name, a lot of people at my school were being retarded and fighting for no reason, so I really felt a sense of like..."DUDE, JUST CHILL."

Slash
June 24th, 2007, 05:21 AM
I'm not sure anymore how i got my nick.. But the way i remember it it was back in the golden days of LANing, sometime in the last millennia. To access each others computers we had to type in "\\pc name". It seemed cool at the time to call my computer "Slash", because "\\Slash" sounds cool when spoken out. backslashbackslashslash.

I might also have gotten it from one of cyan's attacks in final fantasy 6.

Or maybe it was both.. anyways, it stuck on me now.

PS: i HATE slash of guns 'n roses, because he stole my nick! :P I hate when people ask me "oh, so you're a guns and roses fan?!"..

stoph
June 24th, 2007, 05:32 AM
slash, are you a gunners fanboy or what?

back in the day, when Delta Force I and II were big on the agenda at LANs and online, i used to call myself D3M057AN, a bit of a 1337 version of DemoStan, a shortening of Demolishun Stan. yes, "demolision" was mispelt on purpose, but i was very much into WH40K Orks at the time (woulda been 13 or 14) and liked how they spelt stuff so yeh. thats another little bit of trivia from stoph's camp :)

smushed the nickname part of my real name, Fionnuala (nula) and the irish gaelic word for eagle (iolar) together and hey presto. eagles are cool. got a pair living in the trees near my house.

at the time there was - miraculously - a Fionuala in my class at school, so she was already 'Fin'. I got 'Nula'. Heh.

Volchiha
June 24th, 2007, 06:54 AM
Lots of different reasons I have this name. A friend of mine started calling me Volchiha rather often and it just stuck with me.

Volchiha = Wolf in russian, feminine form. (Volk being the masculine)

So aside from the mythological (both scandanavian and slavic) associations with wolves, I chose to use it in russian to sort of defy anyone thinking I'm african-ized. I also use it as my messenger handles and often some gaming nicknames =)

blacky
June 24th, 2007, 11:11 AM
I've been to the states for a year, and my hostbrother used to call me blacky because I would listen to Hip-Hop and Rap at the time.

He was like: "Turn that N-music off! Jeez, you've gotta be black!"
I would reply "Na, I'm on the swim team, dude."

By now my nickname sounds silly to me, so I added a seriouslooking avatar to kompensate for that. :)

Momus
June 24th, 2007, 01:20 PM
I've been using this one since I was 17. Momus (as well spelled Momos) was, in the ancient Greek pantheon, the god of satire, mockery, fault-finding, ridicule, censure, writers, poets, and, I just found out recently, said to be an evil spirit of malicious blame and unfair criticism. I believe he was the son of Chronos and is depicted as lifting a mask off of his face.

This would all seem very appealing to a stupid teenager and fit anyone's internet persona really well. Maybe I'll change it to Philotes? 'Cause… 'cause I wanna be your friend? :*)

Farvus
June 24th, 2007, 02:53 PM
To be honest my nickname doesn't mean anything and the idea was completely spontaneous.
Five years ago I was creating a fanart gallery on some fantasy writer's official website and I needed some login name to register. I decided to come up with something in mood of fantasy stories.

Infinit
June 24th, 2007, 03:13 PM
I got the meaning of my nick writen right under itself
I chose it to remind me that I will have to improve no matter how much I learn to be satisfied :P
I came up with it by searching for a unique nick for a while after useing "Eldanesh" which is the name of a half-god in WH 40k

in onlinegames (mostly CoD2) I use Infinit_MK which is my nick+my initials

0shade0
June 25th, 2007, 07:57 AM
I used to just call me shade, sounded cool back when I was younger, still kinda like it, even though it is soo obvious and overused.
then at some point the username was taken. so I thought let's refine that name some more. after some fucking around with it I thought, hmm 'infinite shade' fits me. but it was too long, so I came up with the sentence: Between nothing lies everything. and everything is like infinite.
ok zero is like nothing
so there you go 0shade0 shade between nothing. but you can't have shade out of just nothing so hmm yes paradox :p
damn it's lame but I grew used to it.

edit: oh yeah my tag and dj name is Dovemans meaning 'deafman' in dutch but more in a proverb kinda way.
it reflects the people being deafened by sociaty
might use that name here too sooner or later.

The alternatives were SweaterPickles and MajorityCock. Now that ive had it for a few years ive decided that buckweasels are a race of intelligent 4' tall creatures that resemble weasels with antlers.

I got Onir a good few years ago when I was playing DAoC; I had a friar named Onirenidd (gotta love random name generators) and as I moved around to other games I just shortened it to Onir since it's a bit easier all around.

love these threads, always interesting hehe.

rustikof
June 25th, 2007, 03:41 PM
art class in my sophomore year of high school, a guy and his friend that I looked like Anthony Micheal Hall (of Sixteen Candles/Breakfast Club/etc), specifically from like the first movie he was in, National Lampoon's Vacation. The son's name is Rusty, thus, the first incarnation, Rusty was born.

The friend was really into Cold War army propaganda stuff, and would address people as Comrades, and so he called me "Comrade Rustikov", which then became "Rustikof".

The rest, as they say, is history.

Also, the name Rusty was already taken (by the rad artist guy on this site who i totally submit the name to as I am not as worthy as he is), so there ya go. RUSTY'S OF THE WORLD UNITE!

Steph Laberis
June 25th, 2007, 08:29 PM
Crowned Laberis.

Trivia: Laberis is a shortened form of "Liberopoulos" and only 3 or 4 generations have the shortened name. I think the longer name comes from an island in Greece or some location, but don't quote me on that. Though if I find myself accidentally married someday, I'll prolly keep the name ;)

JL.Alfaro
June 25th, 2007, 09:20 PM
I was drunk when I registered, and I thought...Im gonna pick a really cool or freaky name which will be amusing to me and ALL those who read it...something along the lines of blasphemy...
so the next day I came back to the forums and theres my nick...I exclaimed a loud Homer Simpson "DOH!!" when I saw my initials followed by my last name. been using it ever since.

Jose Luis Alfaro =JLAlfaro
I've also been known as Al Pharaoh on other forums which is a play of sound and wording of my last name.

Haymaker
June 26th, 2007, 03:29 AM
A few years ago during summer, the neighbourhood farmers were collecting the hay bales. My little neighbour and I walked behind the container, when suddenly some chains broke and the fence that holds the haybales fell down...and a split second later I was buried under a avalanche of roughly 50 haybales. The neighbour boy got lucky, he was lying between two fence poles that protected him from being crushed. He managed to free himself, while I was in my dying breath, choked by the pressure on my chest from the haybales. In all the chaos the farmers managed to lift the fence and dug me out. After I finally catched breath (I was white as a ghost, according to them), they brought me home. It took me a few days to recover and breath normally again.

So...my nick roughly comes from 'hay'. I just added ' maker' because 'Haydead' or 'Haychoked' sounds so morbid:P

Horrorshow
June 26th, 2007, 11:27 AM
A reference from 'A Clockwork Orange.'

Not a literal one, though. The term 'horrorshow' is actually one that is used in a system of slang invented by Anthony Burgess for the novel. It's a pun of the Ruassian word "khorosho', which means 'well/good'. But I never really think of the name to hold the same meaning, but rather just as a name.

YVerloc
June 26th, 2007, 12:10 PM
Adolf Verloc is the name of the anti-hero of Joseph Conrad's the Secret Agent. I picked it years ago as an antidote to the "Soul Reaver" and "Lord of the Underworld" type names that my workmates used as Duke Nukem 3d handles. Except at the time, I mistakenly thought the character's first name was Yusuf, not Adolf. One of these day's I'll get around to changing it. Maybe in honor of Duke Nukem Forever?

Icon
June 26th, 2007, 12:24 PM
Icon originally started from Iconophobian - referring to phobia of images and art. I thought it would be ironic in a web site dedicated to art.

But when I attended to Montreal everyone would call me Icon. Layil even suggested the change.
When I came back I thought about it, and for some reason I felt really comfortable with Icon... so much in fact it's become my alias.
To me it means my inability to live without icons in my life, so much to the fact that I'd be willing to become one itself.

proj235
June 26th, 2007, 01:44 PM
proj comes from the gibson novel virtual light. one of the characters, a spunky bike messanger named Chevette always says, "proj-on." I thought it sounded cool so I took it and ran.
I add the 235 on occasions where proj alone won't work, this comes from 2+3=5, the basis of discordian numerology.

Twiggy
June 30th, 2007, 04:00 PM
Cydonix doesn't realy have a meaning at all, but I can tell it's origins.

It comes from the name Cydonia, a region on Mars, where the Face of Mars and the Pymarids were discoverd. I kind of I liked the name, but realising it' was feminen (ending with "a") I thought Cydonio would be a much suitible for my sex. But then I decided I wanted a name with an "x" cuz I thought it would sound cool with an X in it. So in the end I changed the last letter to x, resulting to my current user name.

Latin term. It means "out of nothing". Also a song from the band Dark Tranquility, which was the reason I looked it up the in the first place. No reason behind why I chose it, I just thought it sounded cool.

Mr. Visions
July 6th, 2007, 02:37 AM
...I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams... - Acts 2:17

Something about this scripture stood out to me, it tapped a vein that poured out inspiration for me and goals for my work. I dedicated my gift back to the ultimate Creator in hopes to one day be a prophecy fulfilled, a light in the darkness, a pair of eyes for those who want to see a story constantly unfolding ; a story showing us the ongoing battle between good and evil and the risks that come with it. And, hopefully in the end, the same message rings clear: God loves us.

As you can see, it's very personal, and I could keep going, but I feel that's enough.

- Visions

Darktwin
July 6th, 2007, 03:17 PM
I had this alias for awhile, back when chatting on AOL dial up was cool.
Twin = I'm an Identical twin to my brother Aaron, aka "Ashrumm"

Dark = Well, growing up we use to get into fights. These fights would always end in a stalemate or draw. Until I began cheating by using objects as weapons to break the deadlock. Of course I would be punished for trying to break the stalemate. Because of this I would get blamed for fights I didn't even start, because it was assumed that I was always the one to instigate. My refuge from these unfair situations was the dark places. Today I love the walking alone at night in the dark, its peaceful when the world around you is asleep shrouded in darkness.

evildisco
July 6th, 2007, 04:39 PM
evildisco came up because that's how a while back static-x referred to their music. I liked the idea of evil disco. The alternative, discovolante comes from James Bond, Thunderball, it was the name of the boat of Largo and in italian it means flying saucer. I use both nicks equally profusely.

Leftyy
July 7th, 2007, 10:35 PM
Leftyy:

It's because I'm left-handed.

Also, it's mostly because of Lefty Guns (Benjamin Ruggiero (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benjamin_Ruggiero)'s nickname.) He was a mobster in the movie "Donnie Brasco" and one in real life as well. He was played by Al Pacino. Al Pacino was hot in The Godfather. There you go. My knowledge of/interest in the mafia is surprising considering my girlish/childish tendencies. I'm a girl.

On YouTube, I have the more clever nickname of LeftyHandedGuns. Heh. Self-promotion. Woot. I guess you could say that this username is a take on my YouTube username.

The extra Y represents my tendency to say things in a really funny way, elongating words. Also, it's a measure of my conformity. But not really.

Edit: That's eerie, I just received an e-mail from YouTube as I posted this.

Ampersand

BobThompkins
July 15th, 2007, 12:41 AM
Thompkins came from Tompkins, from Mr Tompkins in Paperback and The New World of Mr Tompkins. It's a series of books about a middle aged guy who has dreams about physics. I accidentally added an h to it. Bob is the absolute coolest first name ever, so it became BobThompkins.

Spiralfish
July 15th, 2007, 10:46 PM
I Love Biology...

A while ago, in soft limestone of mid Permian fossil deposits, Paleontologists found some shark teeth. Finding Shark teeth isnt anything new, in it's more of the more mundane finds in any oceanic deposit.

But there was something decidedly different about these teeth, for arranged in order of increasing size they formed a radiating spiral of 180 interlocking teeth.

http://www.elasmo-research.org/education/evolution/evol-image/helicoprion-cast.jpg

The animal was an ancient shark that was christianed Helicoprion, and and the game of trying to figure out how this structure might have fit onto a shark began in earnest.

To this day, no one really knows as the soft cartlidge of the rest of the shark didnt preserve.

But here's my reconstruction:

http://www.helenzhu.com/Gallery/Artwork/Helico1.jpg

Helicoprion has become sort of a site mascot for me, so that's where "Spiral Fish" comes from.

Copadichromis borleyi is a species of fish that lives in lake Malawi in Africa.

I'm not quite sure the original birth of my name, because it's stolen in a way, but not really stolen because it was with consent. My eldest brother came up with the name Homeless Goatman, which I don't remember at this point but he told me once. Then my other brother made his name Homeless Wolfman. Eventually I joined in with my name, and then my oldest brother thought it was cool that we had these similar names... so there you go.

Homeless Foxman! Hooray!

I'm kinda slow in all I do. Thinking, walking, drawing, waking up etc. Not that I'm lazy, I'm just slow. One time in class, I brought a pillow (because it was a video-class) to a 2-hours during class. People thought it was really chill to do so and one came to another. Shorly after, Master Chill was born ^^ It's now my nick on practically everything - from ingame till RL.

Long time ago I used to be be fascinated with fantasy genre and as a pen&paper RPG game master I came up with different exotic names for my NPC characters. Oooh. I used to have one that sounded like a yugioh card. Then another with quite a few Xx's in it, then i got rid of the x's (because as we all know, the number of x's in your name is directly proportinal to the size of your manhood.)
In the end I just picked my last name - and beacuse "king" is always taken I stuck a... whats it called, like a revered inverted comma? the tilde key thing. I sorta realised it makes me seem really up myself. Yeah., oh well.

Hookswords
August 5th, 2009, 12:28 PM
I used to use BrokenSword for online gaming. It came from the character in Hero, but that was before it made it to the states. I thought it was a cool concept and would be relatively unknown for the time. I switched to HookSwords a while back. Swords have to be involved. They've always been a part of my life. I train in kung fu and my favorite weapon are Hook Swords. It also works as Hooks Words, because my brain digests words differently or quicker than some and things occur to me outside of normal use. I used to have a student that worked for me that was an international student from India. Her English was good when she got here and great when she was done. She would still tell me that sometimes when I talk she didnt understand what I was saying. That the words made sense but not in the order I used them. I simply told her that I abuse the English language. And I'm a smart ass.

Mine reads as Red Hot Star when you translate the word Hoshi, it's a joke I thought up a couple months ago, it sounds like it could be slightly sexual at first if you don't know what "hoshi" means and are a dirty minded teenager like most of the people I spend my time with. It also has a rather nice ring to it.

The joke, in case people don't know about stars, is that red stars are the coldest of stars, and so by comparison would not be called hot.

According to whose definition?

There's a lot to learn from a failed star...Jupiter is a star in the radio spectrum.

My current handle is just my last name. I also go by BRNK, which I think looks cooler ;).
The funniest nickname I've had though was my old music nom de plume, Mechapon, which is the name of the gigantic, robotic gorilla that is the 2nd level sub-boss in the game Stryder. I had a book as a kid of Genesis strategies and that name an image stuck with me.

But I'm afraid I'm going to have to refer to you as Mr Jackson from now on. Good day.

Ivory = Beautiful, rare, delicate, white (pure), strong and able to be used in a wide variety of ways (yet in all it's uses, always retaining its qualities listed before)....basically, what I hope my art to be.

Oasis = Unique, solitary, a haven from the normal harshness that exists all around us.
Basically, what I think represents myself.

My name always reminds me why I began doing art and where I am aiming as I move forward :)

Oh c'mon, Ivory means elephant horn, and Oasis means an exclusive and/or controlled [and therefor ideal] environment. It spells "ruthless blackmarket".

AsaB is short for my real first and middle name, that is, Ása Bryndís.
It's not really internet-friendly like that, so I usually shorten it a tad.

The meaning of those names however, is circa "A nordic armoured goddess" - and when it's combined with my last name, which means "a daughter of a warrior", it makes me sound far more hardcore than I am in real life :)

I used to get called all sorts of names when I was a preteen because I was tall, skinny and generally my legs are longer than common human proportions would have. Sticks was one of them. Over time it lost it's negative meaning and now my oldest and best friends call me that.

Omen

An omen (also called portent or presage) is a phenomenon that is believed to foretell the future, often signifying the advent of change. Though the word "omen" is usually devoid of reference to the change's nature, hence being possibly either "good" or "bad".

Spirits

An incorporeal but ubiquitous, non-quantifiable substance or energy present individually in all living things. Unlike the concept of souls (often regarded as eternal and usually believed to pre-exist the body) a spirit develops and grows as an integral aspect of a living being.

out of a personal interest, how easy or hard do you find it switching from art to programming and back again?
Do you find that solving a code problem can take your creative energy away for a time? if so, do you find it harder to get into a programming frame of mind after working on a creative piece of art?

After a workday full of logical, left-brained tasks it feel really relaxing to have something that's more intuitive to work on. I've usually got to do something else before I can get started though, to give my left-brain some time to wind down - eat supper, catch a half-hour of TV, etc - before I can really be productive.

On days that I end up working late to get a project finished on time I'm usually too mentally exhausted to do much more than simple studies. I usually give up and go play videogames or read my novel or something instead.

I don't usually try anything creative in the mornings before I get to work so I haven't had too much problems getting into 'programmer mode'.

MacTire
May 14th, 2010, 04:26 AM
Mac-Tire: (there should be a fadha (Irish equivalent of the French accent egu) over the I) It's my favourite of the Irish words for "wolf". The literal translation is "son of the earth / land". It's an example of what is referred to as a "noa" name, a sort of code to describe something for fear that using it's real name would draw it's attention. A variant that I also use elsewhere is Madra-Aalta, which is another Irish word for wolf, a more direct one as it literally translates as "wild dog".

witcrack
May 16th, 2010, 03:08 PM
It's actually derived from "biscuit cracker", cut off the first and last syllables, you get "cuit-crack" which is rather meaningless, so i played with it a bit more and i have "wit-crack" and later decided to drop the dash :teeth:

But no actually, the truth is I'm always fascinated by a jester character or a fool, but using "jester", "clown", "bozo" for a name would be too obvious (prob'ly many people already used that), and "joker"... well Mr. Heath Ledger has successfully made that as one of the most wanted name in the whole planet but i wanted a unique name, so it's a no. I like "fool" for it has a mysterious feel in it, but i saw someone already using it as a screen name. I almost went for "wit-cracker" after going through a few wikies but i didn't like how it sounds, it's like an occupation instead of a name. So "witcrack" it is. It sounds more like a one word of only two syllables, it's practical and easy to remember (esp. by me).

You know, ... i actually like the first reason better. Why didn't i think that way back then? :D

Bruce Pluto

Howdy CA forum!

Guess I’ll throw my own explanation for why people see what they see ( & get what they get) when they read a post of mine. Not that it means anything, but here goes.

I actually enjoy these kind of threads, it helps me to feel that I’m getting a better understanding of people that are members of the board.

Anyway, I start, BRUCE PLUTO, my first icon name isn’t really from my first name. It comes from a slant of my last name; Broussard. Broussard is a very popular name in southeast Texas and southwest Louisiana. I’ve heard it used in the movies several times ( JFK & Runaway Jury) while actors portray events happening in this part of the country of US of A. The pronunciation down here is “ Bruce-sard” , that’s how it’s spoken.

Now the second part is really simple. Several years ago I enjoyed the emulated art of Frazetta. One person that at that time captured a lot of Frazetta’s style was someone named Donny Jupiter (aka Donald Marquez). I thought, “How cool to have a name that reflects not only ones interest in art but ones interest in the universe!” I decided to adapt into my own icon a reflection of the same interest……. Thus Bruce Pluto was created. Not that it means anything…..it’s just the reason for what is seen on my posts.

Guess that explains it.

BP, out

Some interesting stories behind the names, here's mine.

For years since high-school my screen name had always been "Fetus-Man" , then one night I was getting into anagrams and decided to see what happened to my screen name if i re-arranged the letters and guess what i got?

Austen FM

Austen is my real name, correctly spelled with the "E" instead of the traditional "I", and the leftover "FM" is from the first letter of the two words of my old screen name "fetus-man"

Crazy Shit, i was freaked out!

That was about the time I started lurking on concept art.

HI GUYS. New here. Sliiiightly intimidated. :P

My username is derived solely from the fact that I am a hopeless romantic... emphasis on the hopeless. Still searching for my one and only. 9.9

I used to use the name "musicmaker" for a lot of stuff (despite the fact that I didn't actually make any music...) I always used to think that the name just sort of popped into my head. Then I watched the old Willy Wonka movie and got super-excited when he said "We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams."

I would still be using "musicmaker" if it didn't make me feel pretentious. :/

It's a strange story, really. DBZ is obvious, but Merciter less so.

Merciter is the merging of my two favorite Sailor Moon characters (and my single favorite OTP of all time), Sailor Mercury and Sailor Jupiter. Pronounced Merk-iter (because I enjoy screwing English over) it's been my internet alias for forever.

2005 is when I graduated high school, first went to Japan, and it's a cool number because it has a 2, 5, and 00s in it.

Echøplex
May 22nd, 2010, 05:49 PM
I believe an echoplex is a device for tape delay effects, used with guitars and such.

But other than a snazzy device for instruments such as guitars, it's also the name of a song from a Nine Inch Nails album (but neither the album or the song are my favorite from NIN). Most of my screen names have been taken from songs of my favorite bands, for I love music almost as much as I love making artwork. However, I possess no talent in making music. :'C

Art and music, can't live without them~

Klaas + Illu(stration) = Klaasillu

That is how it born. Nowadays, the more I read "Klaasillu", the more I remember of a young rebel penguin stealing his grandfather's trousers for some obnoxious vivid reason.

Two Listen
July 26th, 2010, 05:12 PM
When I got engaged to my wife a couple years ago, we had established very early on that we didn't want to simply use my last name - nor did we want to combine our existing names, or simply use her family's last name either. We did not feel that either of us were our former families, and it is - and always has been, in our nature to create whenever possible.

We viewed our marriage and life together as an opportunity to come up with something different than the tradition, and so we began thinking of various last names. We'd looked through all the lists and things of that nature looking for your typical badassery, but it was hard to narrow it down. We decided to start by trying to find something starting with the letter "L" not only because we liked how it'd flow with our first names thereafter, but also because we were at the time relative fans of Death Note and L is totally a badass.

After a week or two of looking through your typical names - we also decided upon the restriction that it had to be incredibly uncommon, it couldn't be a name you'd see everywhere because let's face it that's just stupid. What's the point in choosing a completely different last name if you're going to wind up going with "Smith" or "Brown"?

Now, at this point in our lives we were 900 miles away from one another, and spent all day of almost every day we could with our headsets on, and just spent every day talking. One night as we were talking I was thinking on names again, and I considered the name "Listen".

I'd wanted to create every aspect of our lives, and create them in such a manner as to always work towards ensuring our happiness. Given our last name being official after we were wed, "Listen" seemed somewhat appropriate. I wanted it to be the case, when every time I signed a receipt, or received a piece of mail, or a paycheck, or sent an email, or anything of the sort - that I was always reminded to "listen" - to my wife, to my heart, to all of the things that really matter, and to never lose sight of this idea. Also I like word play and the fact that my last name is now also a word is totally awesome.

She really liked the idea and so it was decided that we'd wind up changing our last name to "Listen", and this happened last year when we got married.

We came up with the idea and had it pretty well set in stone about a year prior to our wedding, though, and at that time I wanted to come up with a new screen name for online communities and usage. As always, I didn't ever want to get caught up in what was the "feeling" of whatever I was doing, be it shooting someone in the face, or posting on some forums, I always wanted to remember her and what my priorities should be.

As I said - I like word play, and the number 2 has been my favorite number for as long as I can remember. I decided to put the two together as "Two Listen", not only using the second half as my last name - but also to remind myself further that whatever I do - even here, where she is not posting herself - that it's not just me I'm working for. There's two of us and that I must always keep that in mind. That every painting, every study, every bit of advice or word of wisdom doesn't come from me, it comes from who I am as a result of her, and should be done in a manner worthy of her.

I've stuck with "Two Listen" for a long while now.
