I like the quick sketches. The forehead on the last one seems a little flat compared to the rest of the face but as you said its a rough sketch. I was wondering, do you have a picture of the whole bot though? I would definately like you to show more of it.

the girl with her hair blowing in the wind from june 26th is ENORMOUS!
the expression is incredible, but i do believe you've drawn it from a photo?
i like your black-on-brown quickies as well. you could develop them further
in my opinion.. get some nice shade-and-light compositions going on.

Yes I did...as a matter of fact, a lot of the above have been done from reference photos...
there is a ton of stuff that you can learn from using photographs...most especially composition....and different and varying sets of facial features.

Hi, everyone ..
for those of you who remember visiting this sketchbook before., I apologize for the late update... will try for not let it happen gain..
here are 2 new sketches that I just "finished:
1: guy jumping to get hold of a rope-stair..
2-woman in a pose..
no photo reference was used for these however I did reference the anatomy ...
I am thinking about taking the girl to a more finished level,
whad da ya think!
mehran
July 4th, 2007, 02:41 AM
today's sketch....
done without a reference...in like an hour or so in Artrage2 ..
the problem with artrage is that it doesn't have move/cut/rotate tools.. in short you can;t manipulate the pixels you can only DRAW... but the pencils are so wonderful that it's a blast working with it..so Unless you are really really good .. it;s going to take some time getting any thing good out of it..but the feel is natural enough..
Crits and comments are welcomed

July 4th, 2007, 10:39 AM
You are just getting no love today, huh Mehran? I do like the girl in pose, but the jumping guy has more action, more going on, he's more dynamic. There's the "is-he-gonna-make-it!?!?!?" fingernail-mowing tension there. I'm curious though, if you weren't always using artrage, what were you using? And for "the singularity" (which is my favorite piece so far) did you actually render that in 3d (using maya, blender, etc) or is it photoshopped (or whatever tool you happen to be using) and what tool DO you use? I'm eager to find out how you're producing such great work.
mehran
July 4th, 2007, 11:39 PM
You are just getting no love today, huh Mehran
you are right about that..
about the singularity...yes it was actually done in 3d and..photoshop was used in the texturing stage and than later in the final stage to pump up the lighting, add a background, reinforce lighting directions, addding more shadows and stuff like dat...
As for the jumping guy..thanks for the appreciation.. I will try to finish the girl this month and if I have no other concept for next month, I'll use him..
thnx

well I don't prefer 3d over 2d, I'd rather like a blend both.... getting the perspective right is so easy with 3d ,though some think of it as an immoral shortcut.. but who gives a flying you-know-what about what people say....
I use 2d mostly for concept and visualization stages.. and during the 3d production stages as a quick and reliable method to set a proper direction and mood for the hole piece.. (paint overs!!!)

nice last sketches, everything on the lady's face looks just right, and the lighting is great too. for the little scary creature besides her, are you going to give it an animal neck (up and behind it;s head) or a human-look neck (under the head)?
and your 3D modeling are so good!

Hi all ,
First off Happy xmas (to all those who care)..
and here is my final piece(wip) of this year..
it's a ship design. Underwater transportation and stuff.
I am trying to give it sorta modern-stylized feel. unlike the "MYSTICAL- magical/aggressive feel" that is so common nowadays. am going for a rather normal feel. still a ton of work left..
I really need crits on this one
so fire on will

Nice work, man! Both the sketchy stuff and the more finished pieces look good. This may or may not be a surprise to you but what I like most about these is your design of clothing and costume. You end up with some cool patterns and color schemes.
My only general crit is to focus a bit more on facial anatomy. It's possibly the most difficult thing in the world! But generally, great work!
mehran
August 29th, 2010, 11:03 AM

Fantastic!
Blown away. Your colors are stupendous.
Nice lighting effects.
Really digging the last piece shown here with the woman in black and red.
Although there is something awkward about her right hand. It looks a little too small in relation to her arm/body with the foreshortening.
Actually, trying it out in the mirror, I am wondering if we should see less of the top of her hand with that position and point of view.
With the fingers that high it suggest a bend that would be difficult to achieve even is she were very nimble, I think.
Check it out and see what you think.
Other than that, everything looks really cool.

Wow, great skechbook man, you've improved a lot over a small amount of time. I love your work with colour and comoposition. Your colours look like they're referenced from film snapshots, great realistic colour. As for crits, it would be nice to see what you think you need to improve on in your work, you're look like your at a point where you can self guide your styles and pieces and pull off really great results. Once youve pinned what you need to work on we can help crit. I did notice you might need to work on hands and different subject matter.
Also thanks for viewing my sketchbook. :)
You working in industry at the moment?

thanks! glad u liked my stuff, i have worked as a lighting-artist in the 3d feild for 4 years, so that helps alot when it comes to painting light and guesstimating it's reaction.
Right now I am doing art-direction for a small startup weRplay (http://www.werplay.com/) we 'll be releasing our first game soon in a couple of week for iphone, so check back soonish for the link.
And you are right about changing subject matter, but i LOOOVE doing characters! cant get enough of 'em! they are like crack! and i am bad at dropping addictions :(
Jonathan C!
Thanks Man!

Hey mehran, thanks for dropping by my sketchbook!
Nice sketchbook you have here, interesting character designs. I especially like the piece in post #141. Elegant pose, great costume and awesome design! I do think you could take it even further though. There's some great rendering and details in the dress and skull for example, but her face, shoulder cloak, hand and foot still look a bit unfinished.
Nice work nonetheless, keep it up!
