a quicky with charcoal

Charcoal rocks. And if you wanna get really messy, try rubbing an even coat of powdered charcoal over a page to get a constant dark value. After you've done that (at which point your hands will probably be black), work into it with the charcoal sticks and erase for lighter values. You can make some neat stuff with a few quick strokes of a stick and some highlights done by erasing.
