View Full Version : Future Major

I'm entering my senior year this fall, and consequently I have to pick a college to go to and then of course a major. My criteria for a college is a good program for the major I choose.
The thing is, I can't decide what major. It's between Enviromental Science or Art. Art of course would be a visual communication/graphic design/illiustration concentration. Both majors are interesting to me and I'm sure I'd be content doing both. But I think the Enviromental major would be more helpful to society at large than my art. Really I don't know.
Is there a way to combine the two? Or perhaps Major in one and minor in the other?
Please just give me your thoughts, comments, or suggestions. Thank you

Go with your gut feeling. Don't do it for the society at large- be selfish at this point. Only you know what's going to be more satisfying. And if you lunge headlong into a major and suddenly realize it isn't you, then simply change your mind. It's really THAT simple.
But my recomendtion would be take a stab at one, try your darndest at it and see if you're still feeling that passion for it. If you find out, it's not you then switch over- but if on the odd chance you're still digging it, then take classes in the other discipline.
Remember that college is only a wee teeny tiny part of your life. While it might seem oh-so important now, it'll be done with soon. Choose a career path and not a job path. You want satisfaction- and not necessarily a dollar amount to keep you happy in the long run.

Listen to Dave. :-) He is right: your life will not be locked into place by what you pick to study in college. I am currently seven years out of college and just starting to see the array of vastly different and unexpected career choices available to me.
And about serving the community – start by doing what you have a passion for. Later, you can find ways of serving the community by using that passion and the skills that that passion drove you to learn. Also, don’t forget the power of weekends. You can (and should) explore different interests in your free time. Life needs balance, after all.
Good luck!

I always thought the best way to adequately serve my community is to be a happy & busy bee there. And when I mean happiness, it's exactly what seedling is talking about- it's about your personal passions and motivations. What might be ideal for you might not be ideal for us, but its about you and your happiness right now.
We're trucking along merrily alongside one another, not because of one another. The best way I can serve you is by being the best me.
(geez, I didn't mean to get so philosophical alluva sudden! I sound like a fortune cookie!) :blahblah:

thanks guys. That is helpful, especially the 'college is not the end' bit. I'll follow both my passions (for the enviroment and arts) and see which one will make me happiest.

AND if for some reason you find something else (gasp!) along the way that stokes a passion... than follow that. You haven't been pre-destined to do anything your heart doesn't want to do. Don't be afraid of change. Don't be afraid of following your heart. Don't be afraid of success. Don't be afraid of fear. Be empowered is probably the best mantra to follow.
