Compress images, they shouldn't be more than 200k

- Hmm I can't find the picture that used to be the IDW avatar, maybe I'll come up with something new or something -

Topic: Massive Excavator

Background: I think the topic speaks for itself. As it is my first time as moderator for IDW I thought it might be good to start with something big and simple :)

Brief:

1. Design a machine that can dig up tons of earth (or coal or whatever) at a time.

2. It should be able to move around on its own.

3. It can be either a custom build excavator or one straight from the factory, as long as its massive.

4. Note that there is no time period or setting specified, so the excavator can be set in the past, present, future, fantasy setting or sci-fi.

Deadline: July 1st

that'll give everyone about 2 weeks to finish something. I hope to do one a week in the future like the other activities, depending on how many entries there are the coming weeks.

Grenogs: type then the url to your image on photobucket or imageshack and end with . I use photobucket which has the simple option of copying the above straight into your posts.

A good topic, nice chance to do something big and clunky.

Away from the computers this until monday so it might have to be a pen and ink job I think. Plenty of possibility for this one too, even outside the conventional big-digging-machine range.

Quick question, would 3D be fine for this? I like the topic and my 3D stuff is waaay rusty..

I think I won't allow that...yet. I might try to give it a chance in a couple of weeks, just to see how it goes. However, like in all the other weekly activities the line has to be drawn somewhere and for now it's 2d only.

Using 3d as a setup for the final painting is ok though :)

I finally have some free time so i might give it a go...

Thought I should have some fun with the topic myself :) so here are some sketches and thumbnails. I think I'm going for the one on the top left, but it needs to be bigger to really fit the 'massive' part.

Hope to see some more people in here, although I didn't really expect the first new IDW to be very crowded :P

Whoa! Vida, have you posted a sketchbook?

That concept is awesome, I get the image of that giant buzz saw ripping through the earth's crust. The lave makes it kind of reminiscient of the concept work for Revenge of the Sith.

The deadline for this one is set for Juli 1st.

However, because of a last minute change of plans I'm in Geneva tuesday 3rd of juli so I have to make the poll on the 2nd which means that for some people I'll be a little early with the poll (differences in time zone and stuff). Make sure you post your entry early.

needs loads of work but a quick WIP....the planet excavator aka the death drill, because blowing up planets is just not "universe" friendly...

Here is my w.i.p. so far, the sil and rough sketch drawing, still need to figure some stuff out of course haha. Anyway this topic is awesome to start with.
Welcom to modding IDW yoitisi.

Edit:

Well I had some things to change, the feet being pointed would have sunk him into the ground, so I did soething that would help keep the excavator planted. Changed up some other things from the sillhouette due to the fact this is more functional.

vida realy nice image you done there, however i have only one crit, i cant see how big it is, maybe if you put in some kind of human or vehicle activity into the scene, possibly in the foreground, that will then give it some scale,

ViDA

Thanks, I am still tweaking it one way or the other. The scale is going to be N1 priority ; ).

Here is my final for this weeks IDW. Changed plans and went for a more futuristic excavator.

http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t291/yoitisi/IDW037MassiveExcavator.jpg

I'd hoped there'd be more finished works in here by now, but there's still some 24 hours to go, so everyone still working on something: post it :D

I'll try to put up some crits at the poll.

sittin' here at work roastin' my but off trying to make heads or tails of my drawing. Not sure if I am going to have time (or ambition) to finish but I'll post the WIP at least.
Wish me luck....

As per usual I started late, didn't have enough time to take on what I wanted, and thus didn't finish.
Anyway, fun project.
Will have to make time for more.
I was going for a future-ish Caterpillar time excavator where we have made it to the moon and the company has decided to get back to the root of their name with their forms.
Also, the thought was that the excavator would need to have some of it's joints and tender parts shielded moon mini asteroids.
I posted the WIP sketch and the WIP sketch w/color bits to help illustrate my form a little better.
Hopefully I will find some time to finish this one up later.
Comments and crits welcome.
Thanks!

Striding across the Olympus Plain 'Vulcan's Hammer' was originally constructed in 1886 to take advantage of the Martian mineral wealth. Even 15 years later it is still one of the largest excavators in the Exterran Empire.

Excellent - had chance to get past a busy weekend and get this finished.
